How the shortlist is built
This is a rules-based ranking, not a genetic model. Every criterion reads a field a stud actually filled in on its profile, and the order you rank them in is what decides the weighting.
Your order does the work
Your first priority counts three times, your second twice, your third once. Two stallions that both suit your discipline separate on whichever of your other two picks they answer better.
What each criterion reads
Proven sire reads booked seasons and listed offspring. Competition record reads the performance notes on the profile. Budget compares the standing fee with the figure you gave, converted into your own currency. Distance is a straight line from your location to where the stallion stands.
Blank fields score neutral
If you rank budget and never set one, every stallion scores the same on it rather than being punished for something you didn't tell us. That is why the shortlist prompts you to fill the gap instead of quietly ignoring it.
What this doesn't do
A shortlist is the start of a conversation with the stud, not a breeding decision. Three things it cannot tell you:
It isn't a genetic match
There are no breeding values, no inbreeding coefficients and no pedigree analysis here. Hoofine does not hold the indices a studbook holds. If you want a mating assessed on bloodlines, that is a conversation with your studbook or a breeding adviser.
Verified is not approved
Our verification checks a stud's identity and the documents they upload. It is not a studbook licence, it is not interchangeable between books, and several books require a performance test as well as an inspection. Confirm approval with the studbook your foal will be registered with, in writing, before you book.
Distance is not cost
The kilometres shown are a straight line. What you actually pay depends on the collection schedule, the courier, and whether frozen semen needs a container and a deposit. Ask the stud for the cost of a whole cycle, not just the standing fee.
Before you book a season
Get the terms in writing. Our breeding contract templates cover the clauses arguments actually start over: what counts as a live foal, when you must report a barren mare, and whether a return service is transferable. The stud fee runs through escrow rather than straight to the stud, and the current fees are on the pricing page.
If nothing on the shortlist fits, describe what you are after on the Wanted board and let studs come to you — or work through the full stallion directory with filters instead of priorities.

What does the ranking actually look at?
Eight things, all of them fields a stud filled in: booked seasons and listed offspring, performance notes, the discipline the stallion stands in, its breed, whether Hoofine has verified it, the standing fee against your budget, which covering methods it offers, and how far it is from you. You choose which three of those matter and in what order.Is this a genetic or bloodline match?
No. There is no pedigree analysis, no breeding value and no inbreeding calculation in this tool, because Hoofine does not hold that data. It ranks stallions on stated, checkable facts. Take the shortlist to your studbook or your breeding adviser for the bloodline side of the question.Why only three priorities?
Because a ranking where everything matters equally is a list in alphabetical order. Three forces a real decision, and the weighting — three, two, one — means your first choice genuinely dominates. You can change any of them at any point and the shortlist reorders as you do.The shortlist is empty or very short. Why?
Almost always because the directory has few stallions in that breed, region or price band yet, rather than because your criteria are wrong. Two things help: drop the covering method, which is the narrowest of the filters applied before scoring, or post what you are looking for on the Wanted board so studs can come to you.Does it cost anything to use?
No. Searching, shortlisting and messaging a stud are free. Fees apply only to a completed booking, and the current figures live on the pricing page rather than being restated here, because they change.
